Dark sensory rooms: they help restore children's psycho-emotional state and calm the nervous system. They alleviate fears and aggression, promoting a more relaxed perception of the world through sensory experiences as the child explores the environment and room details. Thanks to a large number of unusual light elements, these rooms create a sense of a magical world, providing complete safety and comfort.

A sensory integration room is a space where a child works through movement. The therapist grades vestibular, proprioceptive and tactile input so that the nervous system learns to process sensation — and the child becomes able to sit at a desk, hold a pencil and cope with a noisy classroom.

It is not a sensory room. A sensory room calms a child down: dimmed light, bubble tubes, stillness. A sensory integration room asks the child to move — to swing, climb, pull and roll — and, crucially, to initiate that movement. A facility usually needs both; they solve different problems.

Who it is for

  • Inclusive resource centres — remedial and developmental sessions under an individual development plan.
  • Schools and kindergartens with inclusive classes — a resource room with an active zone.
  • Rehabilitation and child development centres — occupational therapy for children with autism, cerebral palsy, ADHD and sensory processing differences.
  • Private OT practices — compact configurations from 25 m².

Six zones

1. The suspension system — the core of the room

Everything else hangs from it, so the project starts here. We offer three structural scenarios depending on the site survey:

  • Anchored to the ceiling slab — where the concrete slab carries the design load.
  • Ceiling system with load transferred to the walls — where the load must be distributed.
  • Free-standing frame — where the structure must not be touched at all: leased premises, heritage buildings, basement shelters.

Installation follows a design with a load calculation and a handover certificate. This is not a line item for improvisation. See suspension equipment and swings.

2. Suspended equipment

At least three different planes of movement: a nest swing for containment and linear swinging, a platform swing for balance and trunk control, and a therapy sling or hammock for deep pressure and safe withdrawal. Then a rotation board, a two-point T-swing, and a professional sling for high-throughput facilities. The full range is in vestibular equipment.

3. Proprioception and deep pressure

Weighted vests and cushions, body socks, a compression canoe, crawl tunnels, a hug machine. This block lets a child feel the boundaries of their own body — and it is usually what switches off self-injury and constant motion. More in tactile and proprioceptive stimulation.

4. Motor planning: the obstacle course

Scooter board and ramp, therapy slide, climbing wedge, balance beam, hurdles, hand traverse. The child builds a new route each time — and that, rather than repetition, is what trains praxis. Equipment is in sensorimotor development and coordination.

5. Tactile system

Tactile development sets, busy-board walls, textured wall panels, a soft-sided ball pool.

6. The exit zone

After effort, the nervous system needs to reorganise. A withdrawal tent, a cocoon hammock, noise-reducing headphones, a weighted toy. Without this zone the child returns to class over-aroused — and the facility concludes that the equipment does not work.

Safety is not optional

  • Continuous matting under all suspended equipment plus 1.5 m clearance around it.
  • Structural load calculation before purchase, not after.
  • Phthalate-free materials, virgin polyurethane foam.
  • Scheduled inspection of suspension points, written into the facility's operating instructions.

Procurement in Ukraine

Suspended sensory integration equipment is named explicitly in the Ministry of Education equipment list — Order No. 1671 of 27 November 2024, section "Resource room equipment" — alongside swings, a trampoline and a cerebellar stimulation set. Cabinet Resolution No. 129 of 5 February 2026 requires a separate calming and withdrawal zone in every resource room. Funding comes from the special educational needs subvention. There is no regulatory barrier — the question is who designs the space and trains the staff to use it.

What the ISD solution includes

  1. Site visit, measurement and structural assessment.
  2. Zone planning and 3D visualisation before you buy.
  3. Equipment from our own production plus vetted imports.
  4. Delivery and design-led installation of the suspension system.
  5. Staff training through ISD Academy.
  6. A specification formatted for public tenders or donor applications.
