An ABA therapy room is a space for one-to-one work under an applied behaviour analysis programme with children on the autism spectrum. Individual sessions, daily data collection, a visual structure for the day, work on communication, independence and social skills.
What matters here is not the number of materials but predictability. The child must see what is happening now, what comes next and when the break is. Hence the deliberately bare walls, strict order on the shelves and nothing extra in the child's line of sight during a session.

Nine zones
1. The 1:1 workstation — the core
A small table, child and therapist facing each other. The child's chair is placed so that no window, door or open shelf of reinforcers falls in the line of sight — which is why a screen stands behind the child. A pentagonal table is added for small groups or two therapists, and a balance stool for children who cannot stay on an ordinary chair.
2. Visual structure and communication
A pictogram set, alternative communication and PECS cards, a visual learning strategies pack, a magnetic writing tablet and a mobile schedule board on castors. Plus the PECS "time box" cards, which show the child how long something lasts. The full alternative communication range.
3. Teaching programmes: matching, sorting, categories
Material for daily teaching blocks, from simple matching to categories and sequences: sorters, figure sets, mosaics, puzzles, tactile cubes, lotto. The rule is simple: one container, one teaching programme.
4. Emotions and social skills
Montessori emotion sets, emotion cards and posters, emotion cushions, family figures, finger and puppet theatre for rehearsing social scripts.
5. Independence and daily living skills
Montessori dressing frames, button lacing boards, zip pullers and sock aids, adaptive cutlery. This is the part of the programme whose results the family notices first.
6. Reinforcers and the break zone
A break in ABA is a working tool, not "rest": it must be predictable, short and reachable in three seconds. A weighted toy, noise-reducing headphones, sensory balls and fidgets, a mini trampoline as a fast movement reinforcer, a withdrawal tent and a cocoon hammock. See calming tools.
7. Generalisation: the play area
A skill that only works at the table is not a skill. There has to be a place where the same target is practised in play: a rug, a fabric activity cube with pockets and cards, hurdles for movement tasks.
8. Therapist's desk, storage and data
ABA runs on daily data, so the place for protocols must be separate from the child's table and out of the child's reach. Shelving, labelled clear containers, a materials cabinet. The storage system decides whether another therapist can run a session from your protocol. See shelving.
9. Environment: acoustics and zoning
Acoustic panels, a mobile curtain screen, a partition between the workstation and the break zone. The walls stay bare — not to save on finishes, but because the method requires it.
