A special-education teacher's room is where remedial and developmental sessions happen, one child at a time. Cognition and learning capacity, speech and communication, emotional regulation, academic skills — everything a child with special educational needs works on one-to-one with a specialist or in a small group of two to four.

We equip the room by the sequence of a session, not by product category. A child first has to be brought into a state where work is possible — and only then sat at the table. A room assembled from a purchase list turns into a box store by year three.

Who it is for

  • Inclusive resource centres — every centre in Ukraine has a special-education teacher on staff.
  • Special schools and educational rehabilitation centres — daily remedial sessions.
  • Schools and kindergartens with inclusive classes — a specialist's room next to the resource room.
  • Private remedial and development centres — configurations from 15 m².

Nine zones

1. The specialist's workplace

Kept separate from the child's table, otherwise it becomes a material store. Desk, chair, mobile pedestal, cabinet for teaching materials and a UV steriliser for cleaning manipulatives between children. The hygiene block goes as its own line in the quote — it is the first thing an inspection asks about.

2. One-to-one work

A height-adjustable trapezoid table covering three to six size groups, orthopaedic pupil chairs, a four-panel speech mirror and a backlit wall mirror. For children who cannot stay on an ordinary chair, a balance stool: the child keeps moving but stays at the table. See ISD tables.

3. Getting ready to work: sensorimotor regulation

The most commonly skipped zone — and the reason sessions collapse in the first five minutes. An anger-regulation floor platform, a weighted toy, noise-reducing headphones, bilateral boards, a cerebellar stimulation set.

This is also where KYDAI-SVITY, ISD's own development, belongs: a set of seven illuminated target panels with impact detection. The child throws a ball, the panel answers with light — and a single exercise covers movement, hand-eye coordination, reaction, turn-taking and counting. Unlike a tablet game, the child is on their feet.

4. Cognition: sensory standards, sorting, counting

ISD didactic sets, Montessori tactile cubes, sorting sets, large-format mosaics, Cuisenaire rods, a counting panel, a Froebel set. The full special-education category holds 136 items.

5. Reading, writing, learning materials

The block toy shops do not carry: adapted primers, practical mathematics workbooks and manuals for children with intellectual disabilities — exactly what a specialist normally has to hunt for separately. Plus a tactile alphabet, handwriting trainers, pencil grips and a magnetic writing tablet.

6. Communication (AAC) and social skills

A pictogram set, alternative communication and PECS card packs, visual learning strategies, figures for role play. The room has to work for a child who does not speak. See alternative communication.

7. Emotional regulation

Emotion cushions, an emotions mirror, Montessori emotion sets, games for recognising states. Not an add-on to the session: recognising and regulating one's own emotions is a mandatory learning outcome under the state standard.

8. Storage and order

Shelving, clear containers, labelled boxes, a wall storage system, a mobile organiser with a whiteboard. Storage — not the number of manipulatives — decides whether the room still works in year three. See shelving and organisers.

9. The environment: floor, acoustics, zoning

A rug for floor work, acoustic panels, a zoning partition, a withdrawal tent. Walls stay calm and undecorated: this is not a sensory room, and visual noise costs attention.

Procurement in Ukraine

The post of special-education teacher is part of every inclusive resource centre's staffing. Resource-room equipment and remedial aids are named directly in the Ministry of Education equipment list — Order No. 1671 of 27 November 2024 — and Cabinet Resolution No. 129 of 5 February 2026 requires a separate calming and withdrawal zone. Funding comes from the special educational needs subvention. There is no regulatory barrier; the question is who writes a specification that makes the room actually work.

What the ISD solution includes

  1. Site measurement and zone planning.
  2. 3D visualisation of the room before you buy.
  3. Furniture from our own production plus vetted teaching materials.
  4. Delivery, assembly and installation.
  5. Staff training through ISD Academy.
  6. A specification with part numbers, formatted for tenders or donor applications.
