White feathers 5–8 cm: a consumable that serves three different tasks

A set of 100 white feathers, 5–8 cm long. In florists' catalogues this is decor. In a specialist's room it is one of the cheapest working materials available, covering several needs at once.

 Breathing exercises. A staple of speech therapy. A feather is an ideal object for training a directed exhalation: it is light, responds to the slightest airflow, and the child sees the result of their breath immediately. Blow it off the palm, keep it aloft, roll it across the table to a target. A short 5–8 cm feather moves even on a weak breath — decisive for a child whose exhalation is still faint.

 Tactile stimulation. A feather delivers light, superficial touch — a distinct type of sensation. Trace it along the palm or forearm; have the child identify where they were touched with eyes closed.
Important: for some children light touch provokes a sharp negative reaction. For a child with tactile defensiveness a feather can be more unpleasant than a firm hug. Always begin with the child's own hands, and never touch unexpectedly or from behind.
