The child builds a chain — and you see how they think

Geometric Chains is a set of 20 plastic links in five shapes (circle, square, triangle, star, heart) across eight colours, plus 10 task cards showing patterns to reproduce. The links clip together effortlessly, so the child never gets stuck on the mechanics and works straight away on what matters — the sequence.

Four difficulty levels — and not merely "a longer chain"

Difficulty grows by how many attributes the task fixes, not by length. The legend card defines three notations:

• a filled blob — a link of any shape, but the stated colour;
• a black outline — a link of any colour, but the stated shape;
• a coloured outline — a link of the stated shape in one of two stated colours.

At level one both shape and colour are given: the child simply matches. Then one attribute is released, and the child must hold in mind which attribute currently counts. At level four the notations are mixed within a single chain, so the child switches attribute at every step. That is no longer sorting — it is cognitive flexibility.

What it trains

Seriation and pattern copying — the foundation under counting and left-to-right reading. Classification by two attributes at once. Working memory: the card lies to one side, and the child returns to it and holds their place. Visual perception and visual-motor coordination. Fine motor control and bilateral coordination: clipping a link takes both hands, each doing a different job.

For the practitioner

The game gives a usable scale: you see at which level the sequence breaks down, and whether the cause is attention, memory or rule comprehension. The finished chain stays on the table as evidence — photograph it and file it into the child's progress record.

Speech therapists use it as a scaffold for language: the child names the row aloud ("blue circle, yellow square"), which is natural material for adjective-noun agreement, prepositions and full sentences. Occupational therapists use it for bilateral coordination. Special education teachers use it for classification work.

For home

Compact, boxed, no loose spill, no electronics. Good for travel and for shelters. Two can play: one lays a row, the other continues it.
