Activity table with bins: small pieces stay off the floor

Why the bins are in the top. Materials stop scattering: the child takes a piece from the bin, works on the flat part of the top and returns it. It also provides a ready structure for the session — take, do, put back.

The bins lift out for washing under a tap. That makes the table usable with modelling clay, paint, kinetic sand or grains — everything normally kept off a wooden surface.

A table for two. At 90 cm wide with two stools, it seats two children side by side, or an adult beside a child. Sitting alongside rather than opposite makes it easier to demonstrate a hand movement within the child's field of view.

Materials. Birch plywood and solid beech, hand-sanded edges, water-based lacquers and paints.

On age. The maker states 1 to 6 years. With a 30 cm seat and 50 cm table, the set suits children roughly 3 to 6. Check that the child's feet rest on the floor and the forearms lie on the top without raising the shoulders.
