Busy house: four walls of tasks and a chest inside

Why a house rather than a panel

A wall board offers one surface. Here there are four, plus the roof. The child moves around the object, changes posture, reaches up to the roof and crouches to the lower elements. One item takes the floor space of a bedside cabinet and provides as many tasks as four separate panels.

And nothing needs fixing to a wall — the house simply stands.

It genuinely opens

The doors and shutters work: they open, lock with a key and fasten with a bolt. Behind the attic doors hide windows with a dragon and a parrot. Inside it is empty — a chest for toys.

An object that removes clutter from the room rather than adding to it.

Mechanisms they will meet in real life

A door lock, a bolt, a latch, a chain with a carabiner, a letter slot, a light switch, a rotary telephone dial, lacing and a zip.

This is real hardware, scaled down and mounted so a child can work at it as long as they like. They learn how it opens where nothing will break and nobody will say "don't touch".

The light switch deserves a separate mention. Press it, and it clicks. That is the simplest, clearest cause-and-effect there is, and it is exactly where work begins with children still building the idea that "I act, the world responds".
